"Shooting from the Hip"
Camera Work by Dennis Atherton
Opening Reception Friday, September 8, 2006 / 6-8pm
Show runs months of September/October
Dennis Atherton, 44, of Des Moines loves standing on the fringes of life looking through the viewfinder of his camera. "My philosophy is, whatever it is, it has some kind of meaning" he says. "I like to reveal something spontaneous, something unexpected in my photographs." His current show, "Shooting from the Hip" featuring 25 black and white photographs, opens Friday, September 8, 2006, at The Lift 222 4th St. in downtown Des Moines.
Atherton frames the easily forgotten graffiti-covered coin operated pay phone on the street that certainly must possess that untold story. There's the enduring strength found in the beam of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the illumination of a certain nightclub opulence reflected by a posing drag queen after dark.
"New York is such a melting-pot paradise and you just don't find anything generic or soulless there. It's my favorite place to go if I really want to see what's going on. I hope onlookers have their own experience with my photographs, their own interaction, as it's fascinating to me that even in a photograph, the interpretations can vary, a different picture to different people. Who says black and white can't be colorful?"
