Oranges and Lemons
"Oranges and lemons", say the bells of St. Clement's
“You owe me three farthings", say the bells of St. Martin's
"When will you pay me?" say the bells of Old Bailey
"When I grow rich", say the bells of Shoreditch
"When will that be?" say the bells of Stepney
"I do not know", says the great bell of Bow
Here comes a candle to light you to bed
And here comes a chopper to chop off your head!
Chip chop chip chop - The last man's dead.
These English nursery rhyme lyrics date to the 17th or 18th century.
In 1923, Stan Laurel starred in a short film called “Oranges and Lemons,” before teaming up with Oliver Hardy in 1927.
In 1989, XTC released their double album, Oranges and Lemons, featuring the hits “Mayor of Simpleton” and “King for a Day.”
In 2003, a Filipino rock band called Oranges and Lemons was formed.
And now, The Lift features an art exhibit called Oranges and Lemons, by artist/outcast/iconoclast/eccentric/librarian/nerd Brian Hutzell. It can only mean one thing: Six square yards of pink wallpaper in the dining room. To this, we must Lift our feet and applaud madly.
Did I mention that standard issue artist statements bore me?
Okay - a quick note on the works in this show:
These are true mixed media pieces. I start out using milk paint on wood, marker and colored pencil on paper, and photography. Then everything gets scanned or photographed, and tweaked on the Mac. After that, I print things out on photo paper, and collage things still further. The end result can therefore encompass several distinct disciplines in a single piece. To complicate things even more, if a work doesn't sell after a couple shows, it may be chopped up and used as ingredients in a future collage. There are elements in this show that are in their third or fourth generation.
Take the pronoun “I” in that previous paragraph with a grain of salt. I worked very closely with my wife, Hitomi, on these pieces. “Oranges and Lemons” is very much a collaborative show.
Have fun!
