“Simple Is True”
Shadley Grei Artist Statement.
I am a person who loves stories and, creatively, I strive to be a storyteller, whether that be through writing, sketching, acting, directing, music, or painting. And much like the way I'm drawn to other expressive forms, my painting takes me in different directions depending on my mood, the music I'm listening to, the traffic on my way home from work, or who has the upper hand in the battle between the devil on my left shoulder and the angel on my right. During my time in New York City and Los
Angeles working in the entertainment
industry, I had to deal with a lot of smoke and mirrors--people "painting pretty pictures" as a way to distract you from the manipulation happening just below the surface. The same could be said for some of the lessons learned by my heart while traveling on my life path. This journey has given me an appreciation and desire to find simple honesty. Sometimes the bravest thing we can offer the world is our own quiet truth. Some days are good.
Some days are bad. Hearts laugh and hearts shatter. Love changes color. I'm a melancholy fool, a kamikaze romantic and a seeker in search of my own peaceful place to call home. And that's what I try to paint.
